Hustle-Based Learning
“The hustle is an art; I painted what I would think.”
-William Leonard Roberts II
We stand at the precipice of a permanent revolution. We no longer hold the monopoly on knowledge; we no longer represent the apex of information in a classroom. Instead, we are the designers of experiences, the creators of puzzles. We are artists meant to delicately interweave concepts, goals, and ideas like a set of Matryoshka dolls for our students to unpack. At the end of this session, you will walk away with a basic understanding of hustle-based learning and a lookbook of ideas to put into action on Monday.

Digital Badges & Micro-credentials: Tell Me More
How can professional development evolve to include choice, honor prior learning, and meet the needs of each educator while also covering content that is important for their job? Let’s explore the role that digital badges and micro-credentials can play to innovate a learning space.
Participant Objectives:
-Learn what digital badges and micro-credentials are within the education community and how they can create personalized learning opportunities
-Discover the components of a digital badge
-Explore open source tools that allow participants to create and manage their own digital badges / micro-credentials
-Discover online communities of others who use badging for PD
-Explore best practice for using badges to promote competency based EdTech PD practices with K12 educators
-ISTE Standards•C & T and Essential Conditions will be embedded in the workshop.
-Evidence of success: Participants will earn their own badge during the workshop with easy to use tools in order to grow their vision and knowledge
What exactly is a digital badge / micro-credential and why should you earn one? Imagine all of the skills that teachers develop and apply in their classrooms. Some of these high-level skills require focused effort and training, while others are a natural part of professional growth. However these skills are learned, they are perfected and honed through application. Currently, once a credential is earned, teachers do not have a way to highlight the additional skills they acquire through professional developments sessions, social networking, and open-source courses and conversations (ie. MOOCs, webinars, online tutorials). Micro-credentials address this problem by offering educators a way to demonstrate competency in specific skills in order to receive physical recognition (digital badge/micro-credential) for higher-level skills. These badges/micro-credentials serve to create pathways for teachers to demonstrate their skills, exhibit leadership opportunities, and grow in their professionalism, placement status, and influence.¹

By earning a unique and portable badge/micro-credential, educators can substantiate their learning and competency.4 These certifications mean that districts can potentially verify skills and qualifications to match candidates for job placement and growth opportunities.² As educators move through their careers, they can continue to master new skills, build capacity, and have portable digital evidence of learning knowing that their efforts can easily be communicated to current and future employers via badge / credential collections. .

This session will provide an overview of digital badging to facilitate competency-based learning across grade levels and content areas. Participants will gain experience earning a badge, practical tips that begin to put this knowledge into practice right away, and vision for how this competency based learning approach can leverage technology to transform teaching and learning for students and educators.³ Participants will also learn about platforms to support their next steps in digital badging with their students and fellow teachers.
